Port East Apartments
Canary Wharf in East London is now associated with modern commercial tower blocks, but the old wharf buildings at West India Quay are of major historical importance.
Following the erection of the scaffold, an in-depth survey was carried out to identify the essential repairs required to the fabric of the building. Portland Stone replacements and repairs were carried out and all defective brick pointing was raked out and repointed using lime mortars to match the original detail. Finally the metal grilles and timber windows were redecorated throughout.
The cafés and bars on the wharf side of the building were understandably concerned about the works affecting their trade therefore scissor lifts and cherry pickers were employed that could be removed during the trading hours.
A sympathetic conservation regime is necessary to help preserve buildings of historical importance in Canary Wharf.
